The Lifestyle Post #9: A little taste of Paris at Madeleine

A couple of weeks ago, Natalie and I were invited down to Madeleine at The Cube, Birmingham. Madeleine is a really quaint little French coffee house found on the ground floor and it serves up a range of savoury and sweet delights including gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and a mouthwatering selection of cakes. Madeleine oozes French chic and is decorated with little sprinkles of Paris all around. It has a really rustic and authentic feel when you walk through the door which comes from little touches such as the freshly baked bread that graces the shelves.

Once we arrived and had taken a few snaps, we headed over to the counter to ogle over the delicious looking grub and choose what we fancied for lunch. I went for the pear salad which was made up of mixed leaves, beetroot, raspberries and grilled pears and accompanied it with their curry and caramelised banana pastries and Nat chose an authentic cheese and tomato pizza with a side salad.  As soon as I saw these pastries I knew I had to have one. Although curry and banana might seem like a bit of a random combination, I had actually tried a similar mix of flavours before and I knew that when you put them together it is MAGIC. Madeleine's pastries were no exception, packed full of flavour and enclosed in light fluffy pastry, they were delicious! They also complemented the pear salad really nicely and were just enough to leave me feeling full without being too stuffed.

Of course, we also obviously left room for cake. Nat opted for a classic Victoria sponge and I couldn’t resist a thick slab of their Nutella and Rum cake. Just like the pastries, the cake was full of flavour topped with a thick Nutella flavoured butter cream and sprinkled with walnuts. The rum flavour didn’t come through too strongly, but that was a positive for me as it meant I could enjoy the yummy nutella flavour even more!

But, for me, Madeline really won me over with hands down the most delicious hot chocolate I have ever tasted! It was creamy and velvety with a rich but not sickeningly sweet milk chocolate flavour. Finished off with some whipped cream, a dusting of chocolate sprinkles and of course a madeline, it was perfection!

The food, atmosphere and attention to detail makes Madeleine a really cute little spot to grab lunch if you are in the centre of Birmingham and the breakfast menu looked pretty delicious too! If you are looking for a spot of Parisian Magique without having to cross the channel then get yourself down to the cube. Bon Appétit!
